I am trying to create a medium size (up to 50 pages) website that looks proffessional and that I can add content to easily on the go. I do not want to spend months learning how to use the package. What can you recommend to use?

I recommend you use a web designer. Spend a grand, save yourself months, and get them to set you up with something really easy to update.

Would really like a more detailed answer to this - really good question - Maybe some one could put together an article or presentation?

The comment from Webmonkey is right on the ball .. There are a couple of steps out there to check and to specify first ..
Make sure your requirements are clear

  • Do you need some sort of 'ecommerce' functionality
  • Do you want people to 'engage using social media (facebook etc)
  • Do you want a catalog type site? Are you selling products or services
  • Do you want a user base or to capture user information

There are definitely a couple of things to look out for
1. Clearly Layout your requirements - using as much information and context as possible .. Use stories : "I want people coming to me site to look at X and know Y - I really like how yahoo does this' etc..
2. Definitely work with a designer to get the 'vision' or pick a site that you want to copy
3. You will need some sort of Content Management System (CMS) - These aren't rocket science but allow you to keep the content separate from the 'look' of the site - making it easy to change the content with out having to change anything else - There are lots of these out there .. some of the most common opensource solutions are Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Expression Engine
There is no way to cover everything in one answer .. but I think the first step would be to create a blog on wordpress and get a feel for how wordpress works and this might help you formulate your requirements better
